Crannaughfax

Red Dragon

“I see the hate in your eyes. I don’t care if you hate me, as long as you fear and serve me.”

Appearance: The red dragon dives down from the clouds, landing atop the edge of the arid butte. His shoulders are powerful, deep red scales glinting in the blinding sunlight. He flexes his wings once, his nostrils smoking as he smells the air, and looks down toward the orc camp below. Satisfied, he spews gouts of sulfurous fire into the air before he folds his wings and disappears into his cavernous refuge.

Personality: The dragon Crannaughfax enjoys using his strength to overpower and dominate weaker creatures. Arrogant and spiteful, he is easily enraged when shown disrespect and rules entirely through brutality, fear, and intimidation. He alternately feels obsession and disdain toward other red dragons.

Motivation: How dare she exile me! I will prove to them how worthless they are. I will show them once and for all. My power will grow, nourished by harsh wastes, until I take my rightful place from them.

Roleplaying Tips: Crannaughfax is constantly angry, nourishing the wound to his ego since his mother cast him out of the pride. He is an alcoholic, drinking a powerful fermented liquid brewed by the orcs.

Background: The first thing Gwyraendring remembers are the corpses of his mother and clutchmates, slaughtered by the fierce dragon Crannaughfax. Gwyraendring escaped, settling deep in the forest above a human city. There he overwhelmed a goblin tribe, claiming their tunnel-ridden warren as his lair. The surviving goblins bring him whatever treasure and captives they can find for his growing hoard.

Traits: Arcane, Chaotic, Evil, Foolish, Intimidating, Monstrous, Resilient, Strong, Tactless, and Villainous

Dark Secret: Crannaughfax still receives messages from one of his clutchmates. Though he doesn’t know her reasons, she sends him news of the other red dragons, especially their mother.

Plot Hooks
  • Though red dragons have an insatiable hunger for wealth, each has a favored treasure. The red dragon Crannaughfax craves giant star rubies to add to his growing hoard. If you ever find one of these rare gems you may be able to trade it for a favor from the creature if he doesn’t take it from you first.

  • A powerful Orc warlord has been uniting the scattered hordes in the east. He desires to overrun Crannaughfax’s lair, slay the beast, and bring the horde there under his control but fears the losses it may cost him. If he knew of your intentions to kill the red dragon, he could be persuaded to offer aid.

  • Wedged between the stones is a musty tome of lore. It is the record of a hero that lived a hundred years ago, tales of a warrior gathering powerful magical items to use as a force of good. In their old age, they left for one final battle. The dragon they challenged killed them, the magic items lost. Unlike other copies, this book includes something that they do not. It gives the dragon’s name, Crannaughfax.

Connections

Crannaughfax spared the green wyrmling Gwyraendring’s life for a yearly tribute of gold and gemstones.
