About Traits

Traits are a set list of keywords meant to quickly communicate strengths, weaknesses, and other notable characteristics of the NPC. NPC traits may be useful when choosing the right attributes or stats when preparing an NPC for use in your game.

Adventurer: This character is a professional adventurer, and is designed to serve as an equal counterpart to your player characters, either as an ally or as a rival.

 

Agile: The Agile trait is a physical strength. This character is physically quick, dexterous, and nimble, and often able to react quickly to danger. This trait is the opposite of Slow.

 

Ancient: This character has had an unnaturally long lifespan, and their apparent age and physical appearance may not reflect their true age.

 

Arcane: This character has an arcane nature or possesses magical powers stemming from the arcane arts.

Assassin: This character makes a living as a professional killer, either for personal political or religious reasons or under contract to a client.

 

Attractive: The Attractive trait is a social strength. This character is impressive and often draws the favorable attention of other people. This may be due to physical attractiveness or personal charisma. This trait is the opposite of Ugly.

 

Chaotic: This character is impulsive and mercurial by nature, caring little for social expectations or the requirements of the law. This trait is the opposite of Lawful.

 

Child: This character is still a child, and has not yet reached adulthood.

 

Craftsman: This character is a skilled maker of goods. They may make a living by selling their work, either directly as a merchant or to other merchants.

 

Criminal: This character makes their living through illegal means, either by committing these acts themselves or overseeing those that do.

 

Cultist: This character is a member of a secret and sinister religious organization that worships a particular person, deity, or power.

 

Cunning: The Cunning trait is a mental strength. This character is creative, mentally flexible, and able to solve problems quickly and artfully. This trait is the opposite of Oblivious.

 

Divine: This character has a divine or supernatural nature or possesses magical powers that stem from a divine or supernatural source.

 

Evil: This character is profoundly immoral or malevolent, seeking to harm others, either through pure selfishness or a dedication to a larger evil. This trait is the opposite of Good.

 

Foolish: The Foolish trait is a mental weakness. This character often makes quick, but incorrect decisions, usually based on how a situation appears, rather than what it truly is. This trait is the opposite of Wise.

 

Frail: The Frail trait is a physical weakness. This character is not as physically tough or healthy as the average person and may be more easily hurt or susceptible to sickness and fatigue. This trait is the opposite of Resilient.

 

Good: This character is profoundly moral or selfless, seeking to benefit and protect others, either through compassion or a dedication to a larger good. This trait is the opposite of Evil.

 

Guard: This character makes their living by keeping watch over a person or an area, as part of a larger organization or force, or on their own.

 

Intelligent: The Intelligent trait is a mental strength. This character has a powerful mind and is able to understand and absorb information quickly. This trait is the opposite of Stupid.  

 

Intimidating: The Intimidating trait is a social strength. This character is often able to get their way through physical threat, or due to their positional power and authority. This trait is the opposite of Unimpressive.

 

Lawful: This character has a rigid sense of duty and propriety, and is very concerned with keeping social traditions or the requirements of the law. Depending on the culture, these traditions and laws may be good or evil. This trait is the opposite of Chaotic.

 

Mercenary: This character is a professional soldier for hire, whose services may be purchased at the right price.

 

Merchant: This character makes a living by selling various goods. These may be goods they make themselves, buy in order to sell, or both.

 

Monstrous: This character is a creature that is something more or something less than the typical civilized races. They are usually designed as a threat meant to be fought and destroyed.

 

Neutral: This character does not have a strong leaning toward good or evil, law or chaos, whether to intentionally maintain a balance, a preference to conform to those around them, or a simple lack of caring.

 

Noble: This character is a recognized member of a noble house and enjoys the rights and privileges that accompany their station.

 

Oblivious: The Oblivious trait is a mental weakness. This character has a hard time paying attention or focusing on the things going on around them. This trait is the opposite of Cunning.

 

Old: This character has lived past their prime and has entered old age.

 

Persuasive: The Persuasive trait is a social strength. This character is often able to talk others into doing what they want, whether through emotional appeals or convincing arguments. This trait is the opposite of Tactless.

 

Religious: More than a simple believer, this character holds an official position in a recognized religion dedicated to serving one of the world's deities.

 

Resilient: The Resilient trait is a physical strength. This character is physically tough and more healthy than the average person. They are less easily hurt and may be more resistant to sickness and fatigue. This trait is the opposite of Frail.

 

Slow: The Slow trait is a physical weakness. This character moves more slowly than the average person and may not be able to react quickly to danger. This trait is the opposite of Agile.

 

Strong: The Strong trait is a physical strength. This character is more physically powerful than the average person. They can lift or move large objects easily, and deliver forceful strikes in combat. This trait is the opposite of Weak.

 

Stupid: The Stupid trait is a mental weakness. This character is simpleminded and may have trouble understanding complicated ideas or plans. This trait is the opposite of Intelligent.

 

Tactless: The Tactless trait is a social weakness. This character is often rude or socially awkward and has difficulty winning others over to their point of view. This trait is the opposite of Persuasive.

 

Ugly: The Ugly trait is a social weakness. This character is often disliked and repellent to other people, whether to due to their physical features or having a repulsive personality. This trait is the opposite of Attractive.

 

Undead: This character was once alive but has been animated after death, whether through arcane magic or another powerful source. Some undead characters may be incorporeal.

 

Unimpressive: The Unimpressive trait is a social weakness. This character is often overlooked or ignored by other people, whether to due to their weak personality or low social standing. This trait is the opposite of Intimidating.

 

Villainous: This character has evil motives and a grand plan, and is designed to serve as an antagonist to your player characters.

 

Weak: The Weak trait is a physical weakness. This character is not as strong as the average person and may struggle to lift or move large objects or strike with any degree of force. This trait is the opposite of Strong.

 

Wise: The Wise trait is a mental strength. This character is able to draw on their wealth of experience, often knows the right course of action to a situation, and how to avoid failure. This trait is the opposite of Foolish.

 

 

Track NPC attitudes by putting plusses and minuses next to their names for each good or bad interaction with the PCs.

 

Enough minuses could generate a new, unexpected antagonist.
