Fantasy NPC

Dargado Kavarothenai

Goliath Druid

“You may not understand why I do what I do. It is not for you to understand. My ways are my own.”

Appearance: An imposing figure stands sentinel on the rock outcropping, wind whipping the fur lining his armor. Broad shouldered and bald, he is a head taller than any human man, his skin a granite gray broken by a darker pattern. No steam rises from his breath in the icy air, and if it weren’t for him tapping the heavy mace in his palm, you’d almost think he’d been carved from the mountain itself.

Personality: Though Dargado will offer limited aid to those who need it, he doesn’t welcome the intrusion. He takes his oath to the land seriously, and will possessively protect the natural order. He is proud and prefers the solitude of the mountains, becoming increasingly blunt to those who disturb it.

Motivation: They say fate chooses your path when you are born and I’m thankful for mine. Fate has given me a great task and fashioned me to fulfill it. It has hardened me into the tool that it needs.

Roleplaying Tips: Dargado has always felt his own kind to be superior, and will not hold other races to his own high standards. He will refuse to answer questions about himself or inquire about anyone else.

Background: Orphaned after an ice troll attack, Dargado Kavarothenai always felt disconnected. The tribal elders sent him deep into the mountains to learn from an elderly goliath druid and share her secrets and he replaced her when she died. Now Dargado watches the area, protecting the wildlife, and secretly guarding the upper world against whatever may wander from the sinister depths below.

Traits: Divine, Guard, Intimidating, Neutral, Resilient, Strong, Tactless, and Wise

Dark Secret: Dargado is one of a long line of goliath druids tasked to guard a mountain entrance to the cursed realm of the Direfell. His duty is to maintain the seal or slay the things that may break through.

Plot Hooks
  • The elders of Dargado’s tribe dispatch two warriors once a year to travel the intimidating trail to Dargado’s mountain, make sure the druid is still alive, and deliver some small tribute of supplies. For whatever reason, the elders have all decided that this time your party should make the trip for them.
  • An enraged great yeti has been decimating the wildlife that Dargado needs to survive the deep winter. He’s managed to wound the creature, but will begrudgingly admit that he could use help to deliver its death. If you agree to help him kill the beast, he’ll provision your journey out of the high mountains.

  • Few known entrances to the Direfell are in hands other than the dark elves that rule the lower world, which makes the approach Dargado is guarding a rare thing. If you’ve learned his secret and it’s your intention to use Dargado’s path to gain access to the Direfell, you’ll have to convince the goliath why he should allow you to pass. Your reasoning must be sound because the druid has no use for bribes.
