Fantasy NPC

Merritt Bluestring

Halfling Rogue

“Come in, good friends! Come in! As long as I’m alive, you’ll always have a place at my table.”

Appearance: Lively concertina music fills the smoky room of the tavern as you step through the door. Most of the patrons are grinning and clapping as a halfling dances across the bar. He dances terribly, but his wide smile and enthusiasm are contagious. His shaggy russet hair matches impressive sideburns and shakes as he bobs across the wood. With a flourish, he stops, awkwardly, as the music rollicks on.

Personality: Merritt “The Ferret” Bluestring is determined to enjoy every last drop from life that he can and enjoys sharing wild stories of his adventuring days. He can be vain, but engaging, and is especially drawn to the outcast and downtrodden of the city. He is easily angered at acts of cruelty and injustice.

Motivation: Time is short, so I must make as much of each day as I’m able. I’ll eat, drink, dance, love, and enjoy the company of my friends, spreading good cheer and a helping hand until the bitter end.

Roleplaying Tips: Merritt smiles often and is known for lying outrageously about his past, though it’s understood to be harmless. His hands display a slight but constant tremor which makes him clumsy.

Background: Known as “The Ferret,” Merritt Bluestring was an established adventurer and rogue, working with a variety of groups during his career. That career was cut short when Merritt contracted a debilitating disease in an ancient dungeon. He survived with his life but was left with involuntary tremors. He took what he had saved and built The Blinking Dog tavern and the house perched above it.

Traits: Chaotic, Cunning, Frail, Good, Merchant, and Persuasive

Dark Secret: Merritt’s condition is getting worse, with more bad days than good. So far, he’s disguised this misfortune but his physician says that he will eventually become paralyzed if he doesn’t die outright.

Plot Hooks
  • Despite the popularity of The Blinking Dog tavern, there never seems to be enough money and Merritt has been short in paying off The Union thugs that come to collect. His smooth-talk and reputation have let him slip by so far, but that’s wearing thin. He will have to pay up soon or there will be trouble.

  • Merritt takes care of a homeless gnome named Whistler who wanders the city, letting him spend his nights in the back of The Blinking Dog. He knows that the old gnome is being tormented by a pair of city guards but wants to know which ones. If someone could find out and do them a bad turn, he’d be in their debt.

  • As his condition worsens, Merritt Bluestring hasn’t given up hope. Filkis Gimbleshins, the gnome wizard who prescribes his medicinal elixir, says that if a sample of the substance that first infected Merritt is obtained, there may be a chance to halt or possibly cure his disease. Merritt is willing to provide a map to the dungeon, the majority of which, he says, is still unexplored. Any treasure would be yours to keep.
