Cthadras

Eldritch Entity

"Know me, mortal. Know me and know immortality.”

Appearance: Natural eyes have not beheld the physical form of the imprisoned thing known as Cthadras, though the dying may catch glimpses of it in terrible visions. Massive beyond understanding, it nests as a hulking knot of ichor-wet tentacles, dark pulsing sacs, and burning anger. Unable to move freely, it blindly writhes against itself like a cystic tumor hidden deep in the bowels of the earth.

Personality: Since its eon-spanning imprisonment, Cthadras’ only true companions have been its hate and thirst for revenge. It is a mind overwhelmingly alien and one that has been further twisted during its endless isolation. Filled with anger and insolence it often falls into maniacal rages.

Motivation: The trickster’s bargain will be paid and I will disgorge my wrath against my betrayer! I will strangle them from their throne and drink the liquor of their potency. I will be the final master of death.

Roleplaying Tips: Cthadras’ words are heard as vast and grinding thoughts, fury, pain, and indignation indelibly branded into each. It will use the truth for its own ends and encourages rebellion in others.

Background: Created to serve the deity of death and to shepherd souls to their appointed end, Cthadras grew contemptuous of its charges and began to judge the dead, consuming those it found unworthy. For this outrage, it was bound in undying flesh and earthen depths, its only hope the promise of the deity of trickery that should it turn enough souls from death’s reward, Cthadras would be released.

Traits: Ancient, Arcane, Chaotic, Cunning, Evil, Intelligent, Intimidating, Monstrous, Persuasive, Ugly, Villainous, and Wise

Dark Secret: Endless imprisonment has slowly driven Cthadras insane. It may have been visited by the trickster deity and brokered an escape, but all this may just be the desperate delusions of madness.

Plot Hooks
  • Wherever you find this old hand-sized tome, it is one of a kind and scrawled on its pages are tragic verses telling the fall of a powerful servant of death. It describes the story of Cthadras, though the entity is not named. The Cult of Cthadras will want words with you if they discover it had been in your keeping.

  • There is one artifact that connects the entombed Cthadras to the world above, a slick black crystal orb that weeps dark fluid. It is by this Orb of Cthadras that undeath was given to the warlock Uldar Thross, and through it Cthadras holds sway over the cult master, shaping his mind into an image of Cthadras’ own. Should anyone destroy Uldar Thross and take the orb for themselves, Cthadras will be waiting.

  • As you step into the cathedral of the deity of death a waking vision bursts in your mind’s eye. You see a dripping black pearl as it cracks and gives birth to a tentacled horror. You watch as it grows to blot out the sky. Several faces flash before you. Some you may recognize, some you may not. One is your father.
