Fantasy NPC

Yarsh

Goblin Hunter

“We hunt to eat. We hunt to live. Be quiet, be silent, and there may be meat for the taking.”

Appearance: You suddenly realize that a clump of undergrowth is actually a crouched goblin, his light crossbow pointed at your heart. The studded leather he wears is mottled, helping it blend in with the leaves. His head is wrinkled and hairless and his mouth is stained a dark red and looks like it’s dripping blood down a patch of wiry black whiskers at his chin. He flares his nostrils as he realizes you see him.

Personality: Yarsh is a cruel hunter, enjoying every moment of finding and stalking his prey and the resulting murder when that prey is humanoid. He always expects that the worst will happen but is quick to take opportunities when they present themselves. He fully expects he will be the hunted one day.

Motivation: I don’t care what that dragon says, it’s only a matter of time before it fills its belly on our hides. Something has to be done. We need to leave and head north if the clan’s ever gonna survive.

Roleplaying Tips: Yarsh is addicted to watchroot, something he chews to sharpen his senses during a hunt and the cause of his stained mouth. An old snakebite on his thigh gives him a faint limp as he walks.

Background: Yarsh had thought that his hunting days for the Daggertooth Clan were over when he was replaced by younger goblins better able to provide. The situation changed when Gwyraendring killed most of the tribe. Now Yarsh is the most experienced hunter they have and must not only train new hunters and scouts but feed the remnants of the clan and capture suitable trophies for the dragon.

Traits: Agile, Cunning, Evil, Intimidating, Monstrous, Old, Resilient, Ugly, and Wise

Dark Secret: Yarsh thinks that Nohrgo is a fool and that the clan is doomed if they remain under Gwyraendring’s rule. He’s willing to do whatever it takes to kill the wyrmling and relocate the clan.

Plot Hooks
  • Yarsh is deft at setting traps, a skill that he is passing on to the younger hunters. The northern reaches of the forest are filled with a variety of dangerous traps, but Yarsh favors hidden pits meant to capture and injure game and unwary wanderers. The hidden traps he has set approaching the lair itself are deadly.

  • To appease Gwyraendring, Yarsh’s hunters are ranging ever further from the mines to stalk the great forest. Should they discover your tracks, Yarsh will determine whether the hunting party can take you alone or if he needs to return to the lair and plan an ambush with Nohrgo and the rest of his fighters.

  • Goblins don’t have families, but Yarsh knows that the young scout Krick is his own blood and he favors her. He thinks there’s no future for the clan but be devoured by Gwyraendring, so he’s willing to risk his life for a chance to save Krick and the rest if he can. He plans on approaching your party in the forest at night with a letter written by a captured druid, asking for your help in killing the wyrmling.
