Fantasy NPC

Qur

Bugbear Thug

“Don’t worry. Qur will break their legs, and their arms, … and other things they have.”

Appearance: The crowd throws out a cheer as a snarling bugbear is pushed from the back room into the torchlit center of the pit to tower over the muscled dwarf. The creature’s umber fur has been greased slick and he rotates his wide head, neck cracking, pounding his massive fists together twice. He squints down as the gong is rung, hulking arms darting to scoop up the dwarf and throw him hard into the dirt.

Personality: Qur is a beast made of savagery, hunger, and laziness. When he’s not prowling the street to accomplish a given task, he’s usually asleep in some ramshackle hovel. His gratitude to and fear of Silverback keeps him in line, which makes Qur’s violent rages even more dire when he’s let off the leash.

Motivation: Qur go break the door. Qur go fight in the pit. I always have to do things. I used to sleep when I want and hunt when I want … but food is better here … and I like to go hunt with Silverback.

Roleplaying Tips: Qur works almost exclusively at night, in the poor quarters of the city, or outside it altogether. He has trouble seeing and may rely on his sense of smell to tell one person from another.

Background: Qur’s original pack was scattered after a battle over another’s hunting ground. Angry and starving, the bugbear began raiding small villages before being captured by adventurers. While they were dragging him to the city in chains, the bounty hunter Silverback waylaid the group to collect a bounty on one of their heads. The others fled and Silverback decided to employ Qur rather than kill him.

Traits: Chaotic, Criminal, Evil, Foolish, Intimidating, Monstrous, Oblivious, Resilient, Strong, Stupid, Tactless, and Ugly

Dark Secret: Due to his repeated head injuries in the fighting pit, Qur’s sight is slowly deteriorating. He is having difficulty making out faces and he’s afraid of what Silverback will do if he eventually goes blind.

Plot Hooks
  • There are only a few pit fighters that can face Qur’s size and strength in a match and many are reluctant to do so. The fights are illegal and the rules are few, but a lot of coin may be made for several minutes of work. If you’re willing to step up to Qur, the fight promoter will give you something even if you lose.

  • If Silverback is hunting your bounty, he’ll bide his time before making a move. It will be at night. You’ll either be in the slums of the city or outside of it before Qur jumps you by surprise. His goal is not to take you down. Like a good hunting dog, Qur’s goal is to drive you straight into Silverback’s waiting blades.

  • You smell something foul down an alleyway in the slums. It seems to be coming from a dilapidated shack haphazardly set in a dark and secluded corner. Inside, the stench intensifies, centering on a pile of moldy straw. As you brush away the brown stalks you find the first head, then a second. Before you can react, you hear a roar from behind you as Qur charges in to find you toying with his most prized trophies.
